I hear that organic food and its ingredients are flown from all over the world, does this have any effect on the environment?

Currently about 90% of all Sainsbury's organic potatoes, apples, carrots and onions, and 100% of eggs, milk, pork, lamb, beef and chicken are sourced from the UK. We recognize that for some customers it does not make sense to buy organic food that has been flown from a long way away. However only around 2% of fresh fruit and vegetables are imported into the UK in this way – most organic produce imported into the UK comes by sea and by road.

Organic ingredients may be imported into the UK from elsewhere in Europe where larger quantities of better quality products are sometimes available. For example, the UK climate makes it difficult for producers to grow organic top fruit such as apples and pears all year round.
