What is SmartShop and how does it work?
Getting started couldn’t be easier! Scan your Nectar card on a SmartShop handset or download the Sainsbury’s app to use SmartShop on your device, and link your Nectar account.

If you choose to use a handset, you will need to scan your Nectar or enter your Nectar card number. You don't need to scan your Nectar card to shop within the app. Once your Nectar card is linked to your Sainsbury's app account, you can start a shop.
You can find your Nectar number in the Nectar app or on your Nectar card.SmartShop is available in all Supermarkets either through the SmartShop handsets or using SmartShop within the Sainsbury's app.
SmartShop is currently not available in convenience stores.Occasionally we will ask to perform a rescan on your shop. During a rescan, a colleague will scan your basket in part or full. This is to check that nothing has been double- scanned or hasn't been scanned properly. These checks will only happen occasionally when you're checking out at the end of your shop.
You can use SmartShop within the Sainsbury's app. The Sainsburys app works with Apple iPhones (iOS 15 or later) and Android phones (Android 9 or later)
Some of our stores also have handsets at the front of the store which you can use to complete your SmartShop shop.
Yes. simply head to the SmartShop area in-store, tap on a handset to release it and scan your Nectar card to start a shop.
No, you can use your own mobile connection or you can use the free in-store customer Wi-Fi to make sure you stay connected around the store and have the best shopping experience. You will need to accept the T&C's the first time you use it and after that, you'll automatically connect to the in-store customer Wi-Fi each time you enter the store. Just make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your phone.
Ordinary carrier bags, as well as reusable bags, are available to pick up throughout the store. Just scan the barcode on them as you would with any other items in your SmartShop.
Shopping lists aren't available in the SmartShop experience in the Sainsbury's app, but this feature will be coming soon.
Yes, you need to scan each item individually to make sure that you pay the correct amount. For example, if a product is on a buy one get one free promotion, both products should be scanned. If you are purchasing a variety of flavours from the same range, please scan each item individually.
For items that are loose and don't have a barcode, check the shelf-edge ticket for a specific barcode.
If you pick up fruit or vegetables that need to be weighed, please use the weighing scales in the fruit and vegetable aisle to get a barcode sticker and then simply scan that.
Currently, we can't sell any of the following with SmartShop: tobacco products, Lotto, gift cards, postage stamp or mobile phone top-ups.
Some products are tagged with security tags – visible or invisible – and need authorisation because of age restrictions.
Your handset or app will let you know so just pop it to one side when you get to the checkout and a colleague will help you.If you have trouble scanning something, just keep it to one side and a colleague will be happy to help you at checkout.
Don't worry – simply press 'change quantity' on the item you want to change, amend the quantity and if prompted, scan the barcode.
Or if you want to remove the item, you can tap the 'remove item' button and scan the barcode.
To remove an item, press 'change quantity' on the item you want to change, amend the quantity to zero and if prompted, scan the barcode - or tap the 'remove item' button and scan the barcode.
Don't forget to place the item back on the shelf.To edit an item, press 'change quantity' on the item you want to change, amend the quantity and if prompted, scan the barcode.
To delete an item from your list, swipe left on the item. To add an item, use the '+' sign at the bottom of the list page.
To help make sure you haven't overcharged yourself or missed anything off, we'll sometimes rescan your shopping in part or in full. These checks will happen from time to time.
You can open and use other apps whilst shopping in-store on your mobile device. When you're ready, just go back into the Sainsbury's app to carry on where you left off.
You can answer a call or reply to a text message while using SmartShop in the Sainsbury's app without losing your shop. When you're ready, just go back to the Sainsbury's app to carry on where you left off.
You can carry on where you left off as long as you reopen the Sainsbury's app and continue your SmartShop session within 2 hours and you are in the same store where you started your SmartShop.
If your mobile device battery starts to run low and you have a few more items to get, you'll still be able to finish your shop using your phone.
If you want to spend a bit more time shopping, you can pick up a handset at the front of the store. When you scan your nectar card your shop will transfer over.
You can collect and redeem Nectar points and use your coupons as normal when paying at a self-checkout.
